The First Generation
Arthur Edward Hoskins established the A.E. Hoskins brand in 1911, having travelled from England to Western Australia. Arthur held Builders Registration Number 6 and was a pioneer in the WA construction industry.
At this time, the business focused on the residential market, constructing weatherboard and iron roof houses in the Leederville area. As Perth expanded North, Arthur seized the opportunity to grow his business; purchasing blocks of land in Mount Hawthorn and North Perth and constructing brick and tile houses to sell.
After surviving and thriving on this business model throughout the Depression period, Arthur then became involved in Defence construction projects in both Perth & Fremantle, as well as in regional areas such as Merriden. Following World War II, the firm also constructed group housing and individual homes for the WA State Housing Commission & Defence Services.
The Second Generation
Arthur died in 1954, leaving a legacy for his three surviving sons Bill, Tom & John, to continue the home building business.
A.E. Hoskins was now a well known local builder, but the commercial landscape was changing and the family recognised the need to adapt the business with the times. The decision was made to shift the focus of A.E. Hoskins from residential construction to commercial renovations and refurbishments. The firm completed renovations to several key Perth CBD properties, as well as some regional centres, growing a reputation for quality and integrity across the state.
After more than 50 years contribution to the family legacy, Bill & Tom retired in 1993, followed by John in 1997 bringing a close to the second generation.
The Third Generation
In 1997, following the retirement of John, Michael (son of Tom) and Ken (son of John), take over the A.E. Hoskins legacy.
Ken and Michael led the direction for the company’s growth and success, building upon the hard work and efforts of the previous generations and expanding the company's focus to incorporate commercial maintenance services. Their efforts saw the company continue to thrive, whilst remaining true to its founders commitment to quality and integrity.
Tragically, Ken passed away unexpectedly, leaving Michael as the sole Director of the business.
In the early 2000's, Michael recognised that the commercial building industry in Western Australia was changing rapidly. He embraced this change, diversifying the business from a single trade builder focus, to incorporate teams of in-house trades in electrotechnology, plumbing & gas fitting, roof plumbing, painting and cabinetry.
This decision resulted in rapid growth and development of the company. In 2018, we recognised the significant impact this crucial change in focus has had on our business, by changing our trading name to AE Hoskins Building Services to better reflect our diverse range of services.
AE Hoskins Building Services now employs more than 80 staff, including the next generation of the Hoskins family. Michael's sons Jason and Craig are key members of the team, bringing a new focus on technology and innovation. But just like the generations before them, they are learning the A.E. Hoskins way from their father; ensuring the legacy of Arthur Edward Hoskins continues to flourish and his company namesake is at the centre of our identity for generations to come.
